The race started slowly, but when the Torelli guys moved to the front, I learned that it was Torelli versus everybody else. And we had no chance…
As Torelli pounded the field with attacks, I noticed one flaw: they were greedy. They weren't content to have two guys up the road--they wanted three (or even four) in every break.
So after two Torelli’s got away with a couple other guys, I looked for and hopped on the wheel of the inevitable third one headed for the break. He sat up when he saw me on his wheel, but I was able to bridge the rest of the way by myself. Unfortunately, shortly after arriving in the break they sprinted for a prime. They gapped the guy in front of me and I couldn’t close it. See ya later. There went the race.
In the field sprint I started and finished in the same position, thereby confirming my mediocre sprinting abilities. Torelli added insult to injury by winning the field sprint.
But it was a beautiful day and I got a good workout. And hats off to Summit Freewheelers for putting on such a well-run race.
